MARYAM MIRZAKHANI, FIELDS MEDAL WINNER, PASSED AWAY AT AGE 40

We have received with heavy hearts the notice of the untimely death of Maryam Mirzakhani. Most famous for being the first female mathematician to win the Fields medal,  “For her outstanding contributions to the dynamics and geometry of Riemann surfaces and their moduli spaces”,  since 2008 she was a full Professor at Stanford University. By all accounts a modest and generous person, she will be sorely missed by the mathematical community. We at EWM offer our sincerest condolences to her husband and daughter, and to all her family, friends and collaborators.

More information on her life and career can be found  following the following link  on Quantamagazine, at Stanford University, on Terry Tao’s blog, in The Newyorker or in The guardian, as well as many many other places.
