Christine Bernardi, research director at CNRS in numerical analysis, suddenly passed away on March 10, 2018, at age 62. She had been a student at the Ecole Normale supérieure in Paris, then an all-women school, where most students would become high school teachers. Her research was on estimates for numerical methods, such as finite element methods, for partial differential equations in fluid mechanics. She was awarded the French Academy of Science Blaise Pascal Prize in 1995 and was invited as a plenary speaker at the European Mathematical Society Congress in 2008 in Amsterdam. She published more than 170 papers, with numerous collaborators. She established continuing collaborations, noticeably with mathematicians from Italy and from the Maghreb. She had three children, Vincent, Suzanne, Louise; her husband Dominique is a mathematician in number theory and computer science.
