(WM)^2, the World Meeting for Women in Mathematics in Rio
The World Meeting for Women in Mathematics 2018, (WM)^2 2018, is a satellite meeting of the 28th International Congress of Mathematicians 2018 (ICM 2018) held from 1 to 9 August 2018 in Rio de Janeiro, Brasil. The (WM)^2 meeting is a one-day meeting taking place at Riocentro, the venue of ICM, on 31 July.
The day started with the film Journeys of Women in Mathematics, which profiles women mathematicians from around the world, speaking about their research, the mathematical aspirations of women in their region and how the international mathematics community could support these. The scientific program included a keynote lecture, three invited lectures from Latin America and a public lecture chosen by the international members of the (WM)^2 Program Committee. In addition, there was a poster session highlighting the latest research of selected attendees of the meeting or thematics posters on women in mathematics issues, group discussions, and a panel session. You can see the EWM contributed presentation here.
A short tribute to Maryam Mirzakhani took place during (WM)^2. The Maryam Mirzakhan Memorial presents 18 original posters, a book of condolences, and volumes with Maryam Mirzakhani’s mathematical papers as well as a book with papers about her. The Memorial opens at the World Meeting for Women in Mathematics and remains open during ICM. Curator: Thais Jordao. Designer Rafael Meireles Barroso.
