Postdoctor scholarship (2 years) within Discrete Mathematics

The Department of Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics at Umeå University is advertising a postdoctoral scholarship in Discrete Mathematics. The scholarship is full-time for two years. The starting date is negotiable, but should be no later than November 20, 2023, with a preferred start date in August, September or October 2023. The deadline for application is April 10, 2023.

Project description:
The successful applicant will study problems in extremal and probabilistic combinatorics, as part of Maryam Sharifzadeh’s project Saturation problems for posets, funded by the Kempe foundation.

More specifically, the project involves both the saturation and the induced saturation functions. The first part of the project focuses on partially ordered sets, and the second part focuses on possible connections to saturation function for graphs.

Extremal Combinatorics and Mathematics in Umeå:
The successful applicant will be an integral part of the Discrete mathematics group here at Umeå. Discrete mathematics is one of the five main research areas at the Department, alongside Computational mathematics, Mathematical statistics, Analysis & modelling, and Mathematical foundations of Artificial Intelligence.

The Discrete Mathematics group has nine permanent members whose research interests span a wide swathe of modern combinatorics. The group runs a weekly seminar and enjoys a frequent flow of research visitors. Areas of expertise include extremal combinatorics, discrete probability, combinatorial optimisation, discrete geometry and computational combinatorics. Beyond Maryam Sharifzadeh, who will be the main supervisor, a successful applicant will be expected to interact with the other group members with research interests in extremal and probabilistic combinatorics, namely Victor Falgas-Ravry, Klas Markström and István Tomon. Umeå offers excellent working and living conditions. The city is young and located right next to a large river. It is surrounded by forests and lakes and lies close by the sea. In the vicinity there are plenty of opportunities for both indoor and outdoor activities.
