Industry Engagement Officer at Oxford

We invite applications for an Industry Engagement Officer to join the Mathematical Institute, University of Oxford, on a fixed-term basis until 30 September 2023. The position is full-time and the post-holder will work with Professors Chris Breward and Colin Please on a day-to-day basis. The position has a professional reporting line to the Head of Research Facilitation.

This post presents an exciting opportunity to develop and implement the industrial strategy of one of the world’s leading mathematics departments. The post-holder will be expected to spend at least 50% of their time building and maintaining relationships between the Mathematical Institute and its industrial partners, acting as the principal point of contact for interactions between the two entities. They will work to expand the portfolio of companies involved with the Mathematical Institute through visits and advertising, write management reports on the Department’s industrial activities, and set up, develop and maintain administrative systems for recording details of the Mathematical Institute’s engagement with industry.

For the rest of their working time, the post-holder will be expected to undertake high-quality independent research at the interface between mathematics and industry. They will write up their results for publication, present papers at conferences and manage their own academic and administrative activities.

Applicants will be expected to have, or be close to completing, a PhD in mathematics or a related discipline, alongside the independence and ability to undertake high-quality research, and a realisable research plan, involving some aspect of industrial mathematics, which demonstrates a genuine desire to engage with industry. They will have excellent organisational skills, including written and verbal communication skills, and an extremely high level of attention to detail.
