EWM in Romania, 2020-2022

Country coordinators’ report for EWM Romania

Starting from October 2020, the country coordinators for Romania are Georgia Irina
Oros (University of Oradea, Romania) and Maria-Magdalena Boureanu (University of
Craiova, Romania). Maria-Magdalena Boureanu is also CWM Ambassador alongside
Loredana Bălilescu (University of Pitești, Romania).

We have started our activities on November 16th, 2020 when a team of six Romanian
women mathematicians met online for the first time and decided to create a network of
Romanian mathematicians and provide them a mean to keep in touch, to support each other,
to exchange ideas regarding topics of common interest.

Invitations to join the network have been sent to women mathematicians from the
main universities in Romania. A Google mailing group, that is RWM_coordonatoare, has
been created. This became Romanian Women in Mathematics Network (RWM Network) and
consists of 49 women mathematicians from 24 academic institutions, 22 from Romania and 2
from abroad.

Our first meeting as a network on December 17th, 2020 had over 20 participants.
Elena Resmerita (Alpen-Adria University of Klagenfurt, Austria), who was already strongly
involved in EWM and in its activities, has presented some details regarding EWM’s history
and its aims. Maria-Magdalena Boureanu and Loredana Balilescu presented some ideas
regarding the role of a CWM Ambassador. It was at this meeting that the idea of a monthly
seminar emerged.

The monthly seminar “Mathematics and Life” started on February 11th, 2021 when
we celebrated together for the first time the international day of girls and women in science.
