EWM in Albania, 2020-2022

Information
In Albania, 70% of mathematicians are women. Regarding the teaching of mathematics, the
percentage of women is even higher. In the largest University in the country of Albania, the
University of Tirana in the Faculty of Natural Sciences, has two Departments of Mathematics
where we have 10 women out of 16 in total, and in Applied Mathematics where we have 9
women out of 11 in total, and in the Faculty of Economics where we have only 5 women.
Graduates are involved in teaching in all areas of mathematics and 90% of them hold at least a
PHD degree and are involved in various activities such as management, accreditation working
groups, curriculum development, mathematics competitions, etc. They are active with scientific
publications, organization of conferences, etc.

Activities
Some of the activities carried out at this time is a workshop on “Shape the digital future”,
organized in October-November 2021 at the Faculty of Economics, UT, where the mathematics
group presented problems that focused on the use of probability theory and computer software
regarding education in different branches of informatics faced with the challenges of time (for
more see the link:https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1S4ky7gZfsxyrKu0Sxq0JYZqp0MHEYXFr)

Likewise, the organization of the Workshop near the Faculty of Natural Sciences with the topic
The Power – Data Science and Technology, which brought together students, lecturers and
scientific researchers (for more see the link: https://fshn.edu.al/notifications/the-power-shkenca-e-te-dhenave-dhe-teknologjia)

Female mathematicians in Albania are members of the Council of the Association of
Mathematics, where its board of directors has 7 women. (for more see the link:
https://ama.org.al/en/)

That’s how we have followed EGMO for two years in a row (for more see the link:
https://www.egmo.org/people/person1596/)

In recent years, Albanian female mathematicians have also attended the Mediterranean
Mathematics Olympiad, such as MYMC for the years 2018 (for more see the link:
http://www.mymc.it/2018/doc/participants.pdf) and 2019 (for more see the link:
http://www.mymc.it/2019/doc/MYMC%202019_list_of_participants.pdf).

During the pandemic area the scheduled activities were cancelled or postponed. That led to an
innovative approach, which we believe for the most of us were the online activities, starting
from the class hours and continuing with online conferences, workshops, meetings, etc. We started online                                                                classes as a university on 14 March 2020 and continued till June 2021. For this particular reason,                                                                                 during this period of time our aim was to be as close to our students as possible
and to minimize the effect of the absence of the auditor classes.

Albanian mathematicians of Diaspora play a key role in the international activities we organize.
During 18 July 2022-30 July 2022 the Faculty of Natural Science was the host of CIMPA
Summer School “Mathematical Methods of Data Analysis”, bringing together scientists and
students from all over the world such as USA, Asia, Africa and Europe, thanks to the initiative
of three Albanian mathematicians academic women Fioralba Cakoni, Aida Maraj and Mirjeta
Pasha. This summer school was an intensive two-week hand on initiating a variety of selective
contemporary mathematical and computational topics in data analysis and imaging. One week
focuses on the use of relevant mathematical softwares, algebra and convex geometry in data
analysis. The other week covers inverse scattering, X-ray tomography, and data-driven model
discovery for dynamical systems (for more see the link: https://www.cimpa.info/en/node/7068).

Also, in early September 01-03, 2022 the department of mathematics of our university,
University of Tirana co-organized an international conference with the department of
mathematics of University of Prishtina. The conference aims to bring researchers and
professionals to discuss recent developments in both theoretical and applied mathematics and to
create a professional knowledge exchange platform between mathematicians.( for more see the
link: http://wbcma2022.ilirias.com/).
