Salary: GBP 42,149 – GBP 53,348 per annum

Limit of tenure: this post is permanent

Closing date: 13 March 2022

Applications are invited for an Assistant Professor in the Mathematics of Information to commence on 1 October 2022 or by agreement. This is a new post in the broad field of the Mathematics of Information, including but not restricted to applied and computational analysis, mathematical optimisation, inverse problems and the mathematical foundations of machine learning. Willingness to engage in an interdisciplinary and cross-cutting research is very desirable.

The postholder will be part of the Cantab Capital Institute for Mathematics of Information (https://www.ccimi.maths.cam.ac.uk/), hosted within the Faculty of Mathematics. It accommodates research activity on fundamental mathematical theory and methodology for understanding, analysing, processing and simulating data. Data science research performed in the Institute is at the highest international level, aiming to extract the relevant information from large- and high-dimensional data with predictable certainty.

This professorship comes with the additional leadership responsibility to direct Part III of the Mathematical Tripos. Part III is a world-famous postgraduate course which is taught primarily through an unparalleled number of lecture courses spanning all aspects of mathematics and theoretical physics, and typically admits 180 postgraduate students per year (many from the EU and overseas) to join over 100 students who have been undergraduates in Cambridge.

Initially the postholder will support the present Director of Taught Postgraduate Education (DTPE), with the expectation that in due course the postholder will serve as the Director for a period of 5 years in the first instance. The successful candidate will be offered a substantially reduced teaching load when they move in to the DTPE role. Appointments will be made at an appropriate point on the scale for Assistant Professors and will be for a probationary period of five years, with appointment to the retiring age thereafter subject to satisfactory performance. The successful candidate will be designated as an Associate Professor once probation has been successfully completed.

The successful candidate will hold a PhD in mathematics, will have a track record of excellent research publications, and will be expected to lead and pursue a research programme of the highest standard. The candidate should also be able to demonstrate leadership in the development, management and delivery of courses/programmes. Particular duties of the DTPE would include:

1) ensuring a balanced offering of courses with content which ensures world-class training through active, ongoing liaison with the different subject areas within the Faculty;

2) leading the development of innovative provision and delivery of teaching and learning;

3) maintaining and enhancing non-lecture-based teaching provision, particularly focussed on ongoing feedback to the candidates;

4) coordinating the admissions process of external candidates, developing data acquisition to identify candidates who have the potential to thrive within Part III, while ensuring the maintenance of quality and numbers at a sustainable level

5) developing strategies for increasing admissions of women and other currently under-represented groups in Part III.

As for other Assistant Professors, applicants will be expected to investigate new areas of research and funding opportunities and submit grant applications. They will also be required to write papers for publication, attend conferences, network with national/international colleagues and give presentations.
