Senior Research Associate in Mathematics at Lancaster University, UK

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Lancaster University invites applications for a three-year postdoctoral position to work on the project “Conformal approach to modelling random aggregation”. The Principal Investigator is Dr Amanda Turner and it is funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) grant EP/T027940/1. Candidates with a strong track record in one of the fields of probability and stochastic processes, complex analysis or mathematical physics are encouraged to apply.

The project seeks to combine techniques arising in the theory of regularity structures with Loewner evolution in order to understand random growth. The focus is on understanding the long-time behaviour of planar random growth processes which grow by successive aggregation of particles. Such processes arise in a variety of physical and industrial settings, from cell growth to polymer formation. The main aim of this project is to establish scaling limits for a family of random growth processes in which clusters are represented as compositions of conformal mappings (the Hastings-Levitov family). Specific objectives include identifying phase transitions in the large-scale geometry of the clusters, proving that the fluctuations lie in the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) universality class for certain parameter values, and establishing the relationship between random growth and Schramm-Loewner Evolution (SLE).

You are expected to hold, or be about to receive, a PhD degree in mathematics or a related discipline, with specialism in one of the fields of probability and stochastic analysis, complex analysis or mathematical physics. Expertise in random interface models, regularity structures or Loewner evolution is highly desirable. Programming skills are beneficial, but not required. You will be expected to learn quickly, engage with new ideas, and contribute new insights.

This work will take place in our thriving Pure Mathematics section, which has considerable expertise in algebra, geometry, analysis, probability, and discrete mathematics.
