The Weierstrass Institute for Applied Analysis and Stochastics (WIAS) is an institute of the Forschungsverbund Berlin e.V. (FVB). The FVB comprises seven non-university research institutes in Berlin which are funded by the federal and state governments. The research institutes belong to the Leibniz Association.

Within the framework of its research in the field of applied mathematics, research software is developed at WIAS. To support its scientific projects in this area,

WIAS is looking for a

Research Software Engineer and Steward (f/m/d)
(Ref. 23/10)

to start as soon as possible.

The goal of the position is to establish and ensure a sustainable, quality-assuring development of research software according to the rules of Good Scientific Practice and the FAIR4RS principles. The position reports to the Directorate and is part of a cross-sectional structure consisting of the IT department, the library and a steering committee of scientists active in the software field.

The work tasks include:
• Support and qualification of scientists in the development and publication of research software
• Structured on- and off-boarding of scientists
• Establishment and structuring of services (continuous integration, issue handling, release management, archiving, etc.) and reproducible environments
• Tracking, evaluation and communication of trends and developments in the field of research software for the scientists of WIAS
• Active participation in national and international Research Software Engineering (RSE) activities as well as in the National Research Data Initiative (NFDI), the Mathematical Research Data Initiative (MaRDI) and the Leibniz Association

We are looking for: Candidates with
• Degree (Bachelor, Master or PhD) in the field of applied mathematics or a related field (scientific computing, computational Physics/Chemistry/Biology, Computer Science)
• Experience in the development of scientific software or open source software
• Good knowledge of modern software development methods, such as version control, continuous integration, and documentation tools
• Willingness to provide guidance and training to scientists (including in English).

This is a full-time position (39 hours per week), which is in principle suitable for part-time work. The employment is initially limited to 2 years and can be turned into a permanent one upon positive evaluation by the Steering Committee and the Institute’s administration.
