Research Fellow

Research Fellow – Ref:1873130
UCL Department / Division – Department of Mathematics
Location of position – London
Grade – 7
Hours – Full Time
Salary – (inclusive of London allowance) £36,028 – £38,015 per annum

Duties and Responsibilities
The department has internationally recognised research groups in pure and applied analysis; fluid mechanics; mathematical physics; geometry and topology; algebra, number theory and combinatorics; mathematical modelling in biology, finance, industry and society.

Applications are invited for a full-time Research Fellow position to work in the area of nonlinear partial differential equations, with emphasis on the rigorous mathematical analysis of Euler equations and nonlinear wave equations. This position is part of the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) Fellowship entitled Singularities and Mixing in Euler flows, held by Dr Mahir Hadzic.

The responsibilities of the post will include carrying out vigorous, high-level research in the area of partial differential equations with particular emphasis on questions of rigorous analysis of solutions to problems arising in fluid dynamics and nonlinear wave equations, submitting publications regularly in refereed journals.

Duration of the post is available for 3 years in the first instance and must be available to start from 1 March 2021 and no later than 1 September 2021.
Key Requirements
Candidates should either have a PhD or equivalent qualification in mathematics or applied mathematics or should be finalising their PhD or waiting for their viva date. They should also have a strong background in the rigorous mathematical analysis of nonlinear partial differential equations (PDEs), as well as a proven track record in research and publications commensurate with their career stage.

A successful candidate will demonstrate a strong desire to work at the heart of, and fully participate in, an active research group in the field as well as have excellent written and oral communication skills.

An exceptional candidate is expected to have interest and research experience in rigorous mathematical analysis in at least one of the following topics: equations of fluid dynamics (the key example are the compressible or incompressible Euler equations), PDEs with free boundaries, nonlinear wave equations, general relativity or nonlinear stability/instability analysis of solutions to PDEs coming from mathematical physics.

Appointment at Grade 7 is dependent upon having been awarded a PhD; if this is not the case, initial appointment will be at research assistant Grade 6B (salary £33,257 per annum) with payment at Grade 7 being backdated to the date of final submission of the PhD thesis.
