Applications are invited for a postdoctoral position to develop theoretical approaches to study the collective cell dynamics of biological tissues. The position, which is supported by grant funding from the Royal Society, will be associated with the research group of Prof. Benjamin D. Simons, and will be based in both the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics and the Wellcome Trust-Cancer Research UK Gurdon Institute.

The successful candidate will be a theorist and will hold a PhD/DPhil in physics, mathematics, or a closely related field, with an interest in studying biological systems.

The position will be particularly suitable for candidates who have experience in the development of methods in non-equilibrium statistical physics, dynamical systems and/or soft matter physics, with an interest in applying such approaches to biological systems. However, previous experience in the study of living systems is not essential.

Duties will include developing and conducting individual and collaborative research objectives, proposals and projects. The role holder will be expected to plan and manage their own research and administration, with guidance if required, and to assist in the preparation of proposals and applications to external bodies. They must be able to communicate material of a technical nature and be able to build internal and external contacts. They may be asked to assist in the supervision of student projects, the development of student research skills, provide instruction or plan/deliver seminars relating to the research area.
