Department/Location: Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics
Salary: £32,816-£40,322
Reference: LE21830
Closing date: 20 May 2020
This post was previously advertised with a closing date of 01 December 2019; previous applicants need not apply.
A position exists for a Post-Doctoral Research Associate (the Aviva Research Fellow) from 01 July 2020 (or as soon as possible thereafter), to work for the Cambridge Centre for Data-Driven Discovery (C2D3) in partnership with Aviva, a global insurance and investments business, and founding member of C2D3.
C2D3 brings together researchers and expertise from across the University to drive forward world class research into the analysis, understanding and use of data science. It is funded by a series of collaborations with industrial partners, who are motivated by applying the latest research to better serve their customers and society.
This is a key role in the partnership, and the ideal candidate will have an interest in understanding Aviva’s products and trends within the industry. You will have direct access to Aviva globally, and will be encouraged to develop your own network and broaden your knowledge of the organisation.
The role holder will undertake short and long-term research projects in close collaboration with Aviva. Research topics identified as of particular interest to Aviva range from the methodological to the empirical, including machine learning methodologies, personalised medicine, pension provision, extreme weather, transparency in algorithms and issues relating to data ethics.
The role holder will be expected to plan and manage their own research and administration, with guidance if required, and to assist in the preparation of proposals and applications to external bodies. You must be able to communicate material of a technical nature and quickly build a network of internal and external contacts.
C2D3 is based in the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics. However, applications are encouraged from areas beyond the physical sciences, e.g. economics, bioinformatics and quantitative social science.
The successful candidate will have, or be about to receive a PhD in a quantitative discipline and will have a sound understanding of data science methodologies.
Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 3 years in the first instance.
