The person to be appointed should be an expert in mathematics of machine learning in research and teaching and have excellent scientific qualifications in mathematical research. The focus is on a better understanding of the mathematical foundations of machine learning, e.g. of neural networks or deep learning methods using, for example, stochastic optimization, approximation theory, high performance compu- ting, information geometry or the theory of dynamic systems.

The University of Würzburg is currently developing a Center for Artificial Intelligence and Data Science (CAIDAS – www.uni-wuerzburg.de/caidas), and the professorship is connected to this Center. Therefore, in addition to cooperation possibilities in the Institute of Mathematics, the future job holder is expected to cooperate closely with other members of the Center. Demonstrated experience with interdisciplinary cooperation, especially in the field of artificial intelligence, machine learning and data science, as well as with other application areas of the Center are an advantage.
