Postdoctoral positions in the project Modern geometrical aspects of linear operators
Appointment period: 24 months
Appointment type: Full time
Position starting date: January 1, 2026, or upon an agreement
Deadline for applications: October 22, 2025
Gross salary: CZK 50 000 per month
The Institute of Mathematics of the Czech Academy of Sciences (IM CAS) is seeking a researcher for the Czech-Polish international project “Modern geometrical aspects of linear operators: matrix representations, numerical ranges and related matters” coordinated by Prof. Vladimír Müller (IM CAS) and Prof. Yuriy Tomilov (IM PAN), and funded by the Czech Science Foundation.
The project is devoted to investigating matrix representations of linear operators on Hilbert spaces and related topics, as well as to exploring the theory of numerical ranges and its applications, in particular to operator norm estimates and functional calculi. A further aim is to understand the relationships between these areas of operator theory. Positioned at the intersection of several domains of analysis, the project draws on abstract operator theory, von Neumann algebras, complex analysis, functional calculi, partial differential equations, topology, and set theory, and is supplemented by combinatorial methods.
Applications are invited from candidates who have completed their PhD within the last 4 years (or will have completed it before the time of hiring) and who have strong background in functional analysis, especially in operator theory. The position does not include any teaching duties. The successful candidate will work on the project tasks, will have funds for traveling to conferences and research visits, as well as for inviting external research collaborators.
The selection committee will evaluate the publication record, as well as other activities and professional achievements of the applicants, with respect to the stage of their career.
We offer affordable accommodation in the building of the Institute for the first 3-6 months. Questions and informal inquiries should be directed to Dr. Beata Kubis to her email address [email protected]
The following documents are required:
• CV
• List of publications
• Motivation letter (may include research statement)
• Two letters of reference
Applications for the position must be submitted exclusively using the electronic submission system at
https://application.math.cas.cz/Positions.html.
Equal opportunities are an integral part of the Institute’s personnel policy. The Institute fosters the compatibility of work and family and encourages applications from qualified female researchers. Disabled applicants will be given preference in case of equal qualifications.
Only complete applications (including two letters of references) received by October 22, 2025, will be considered. Online interviews with shortlisted applicants will be scheduled for the week November 17 – 21, 2025. All applicants will be notified by November 28, 2025.
