2014-2015 Women in Mathematics activities in Russia

04/22/2015

The nternational non-government organization «Women in Science and Education» (WSE) was founded in Russia in 1993. For more than 20 years the president of this organization is Galina Reznichenko, PhD, professor of Lomonosov Moscow State University.

Every year WSE participates in the organization of international conference «Mathematics. Computer. Education» (MCE) which is held in Puschino town (biophysical scientific centre) or in Dubna town (center of physical research). Cross-disciplinary conferences «Mathematics. Computer. Education» are aimed to unify the efforts of scientists for maintaining the traditions of Russian science and education, developing mathematical modeling and IT skills of scientists and attracting the young generation to science and education. The large number of young scientists who comes from different Russian cities has an opportunity to speak with famous colleagues from various research fields and present their results to wide professional audience. Students can find a scientific adviser at the conference, senior colleagues can find a reviewer or co-author for their article or simply colleagues with similar research interests. The main results of the conference are published in scientific journal «Computer Research and Modeling». This journal is published 6 times per year.

The 21st MCE international conference was held in February 2014 in Dubna. There were more than 300 participants in total including delegates from European Women in Mathematics association.

The 22nd MCE international conference was held in 26-31 January 2015 in Puschino. There were more than 450 participants in total. The following scientific sections were covered:

1) Mathematical theories

2) Numerical methods and modeling

3) Analysis of complex biological systems. Experiments and models

4) Natural sciences education

5) Social-economic research

6) Museum in the modern world

7) Gender theory and practice.

Participants of 22nd MCE Conference included leading Russian scientists who made plenary talks about the current state of research in natural sciences and in socio-economic studies. During the teleconference session the lectures of leading scientists were shown in different Russian cities. There was also an exhibition at the conference which was devoted to 260th anniversary of Lomonosov Moscow State University.

The «Women in Science and Education» association has divisions in different Russian cities including Astrakhan’, Voronezh, Cheboksary, Volgograd, Tver’. In these divisions the various mathematical activities for children and students were developed.

The VIII Siberian congress of women in mathematics was held in 25-27 January 2014 in Krasnoyarsk (Eastern Siberia). This congress was in memory of Sofia Kovalevskaya. There were more than 100 participants from different cities in Siberia and Far East. During the conference participants discussed a large variety of topics: understanding of scientific legacy from great mathematicians, analysis of cutting-edge problems of teaching mathematics in modern Russian and Western schools, discussion of actual problems in mathematical modeling. Participants of the conference included students, teachers and leading scientists from Siberian Branch of Russian Academy of Sciences. As a part of cultural program the participants took a sightseeing tour of Krasnoyarsk, visited the village Ovsyanka – the hometown of famous Russian writer Victor Astafyev and also enjoyed the «Carmen» opera.

The 10th annual Kurdyumovsky readings "Synergetics in natural and social sciences" took place on the 24-25 of April 2015 in the city of Tver. The participants of the conference discussed, among other topics, the mathematical foundations of synergetics. The conference was hosted the Tver State University and organized by the Tver branch of the organization "Women in Science and Education" under the active participation of scientists of the Keldysh Institute of Applied Mathematics and the Moskow State University.
