Celia Hoyles Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire

LKL's Professor Celia Hoyles has been made a Dame (that is Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire) in the New Year's Honours List 2014 for services to education. Labelled an ‘outstanding advocate for mathematics' and ‘the country's leading mathematics educator', the award particularly acknowledges Dame Celia's role as Director of the National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics from 2007 to 2013.

Dame Celia has spread her message about the importance of mathematics as well as the importance of research feeding into practice in numerous publications, through major research and consultancy projects, including a spell as the government's chief adviser for mathematics, and even as co-host on a popular prime-time TV show in the late 80s.
